Faith Art Journaling
I will praise the LORD at all times. I will constantly speak his praises.
I will boast only in the LORD; let all who are helpless take heart.
Come, let us tell of the LORD’s greatness; let us exalt his name together.
Ps. 34:1-2
We're celebrating mothers this month at the Cafe--those women who raised us and those women who are daily committed to do the sometimes hard job of raising, whether a mom, an aunt, a grandparent, a sibling--the list goes on.
Hannah was one of the truly exceptional mothers. Her agony turned to rejoicing then turned to sacrifice. Please join us in creating a faith art journal spread on the verse, "For this child I prayed."
May 2025 Faith Art Journaling Lesson

-
1. What exactly is faith art journaling, and how is it different from regular journaling or Bible journaling?Faith art journaling combines creative expression—like drawing, painting, or collage—with spiritual reflection. Unlike regular journaling, it’s focused on your faith journey. While Bible journaling often involves creating art directly in your Bible, faith art journaling can be done in a separate notebook, allowing more space and freedom to reflect on scripture, prayers, or spiritual growth through visual storytelling.
-
2. Do I need to be good at art to start faith art journaling? Not at all! Faith art journaling is about connection with God, not artistic perfection. It's a personal act of worship, reflection, and creativity. Stick figures, splashes of color, or even simple lettering can be powerful expressions of faith. Your journal is for you and God, not for display or critique.
-
3. What supplies do I need to get started, and do I need to spend a lot of money? You only need a few basic supplies to begin: A journal or sketchbook) Pens or pencils Colored pencils, markers, or watercolor paints (optional) You don’t need to invest in expensive materials—start with what you have at home. As you grow more comfortable, you can explore new supplies like washi tape, stamps, or stencils. Each month's lesson will include suggestions for supplies--but don't feel you have to buy or use them! Use. What. You. Have.
-
4. How do I decide what to journal about—do I need a plan or prompts? You can journal whatever inspires you spiritually: a Bible verse, sermon, devotional, or prayer. Some people follow themed prompts or reading plans (like gratitude, hope, or Psalms), while others journal freely as they feel led. There’s no wrong way—follow your heart and let God guide the process. The Cafe will provide a prompt each month for those times you need inspiration!
-
5. Will I have to paint or draw directly in my Bible? Many people enjoy journaling in a special art journaling Bible that has wider margins and thicker pages. The Cafe's faith art journaling tutorials are based on mixed media techniques, so the best type of notebook/paper to have for our purposes is mixed media weight. There are many MANY experts who art journal directly in their Bibles, and their tutorials can be easily searched for.
